A glimpse into the daily life of a groom
We would like to offer you an exciting insight into the daily life of a groom. As passionate horse caretakers, grooms accompany riders to competitions and devote themselves wholeheartedly to the horses to ensure everything runs smoothly. In a conversation with Mina Hideg, our apprentice equine specialist in horse management and service, who had the privilege of accompanying our experienced rider Kai Ruggaber as a groom for a period of time, we explore the responsibilities of this profession.
Preparations for upcoming competitions begin as early as four days in advance. Mina carefully packs all the necessary equipment. The horses themselves are lovingly groomed before the journey and neatly braided with skilled hands. To ensure their safety during transport, they are fitted with shipping boots and tail guards. Mina also makes sure hay nets are hung up so the horses can travel comfortably.
During the journey, Kai and Mina often use the time to review theoretical aspects of her training and discuss them in depth. Upon arrival, Mina checks with the stable manager about the allocated stalls for the horses, which are then prepared with bedding, water, and feed to create a comfortable temporary home. Once the horses are settled, all equipment is unloaded. With great attention to detail, Mina ensures everything in front of the stalls is tidy and easily accessible. While Kai rides some of the horses and prepares them for peak performance, Mina lovingly cares for the others, helping them settle into the new environment. At the end of the day, she checks once more that all horses are well and lacking nothing.
On competition day, Mina prepares the horses for their classes and presents them according to each rider’s individual preferences. Horses not competing that day enjoy a relaxed walk.
A special highlight for grooms is reconnecting with other riders and colleagues at competitions. Meeting familiar faces and exchanging experiences with other professionals is always inspiring and provides opportunities to learn new approaches that help improve their own skills.
Beyond professional exchange, social moments are equally valued. After a long day, grooms and riders naturally enjoy spending time together, celebrating successes and relaxing.
Competitions therefore not only provide opportunities to refine skills and care for horses successfully, but also to build meaningful relationships and share unforgettable moments. The atmosphere is shaped by mutual respect, team spirit, and a shared passion for equestrian sport. Together, they experience exciting competitions and celebrate the achievements of both horses and riders.
